Meanwhile Projects back on site

31 July 2015

The Council have finished their investigation into the potential hazards of traces of underground asbestos found on the site, which led to a suspension of any activity. We are relieved to hear that we should soon be back within the next week, so plants in the Grove Garden can be harvested - luckily our Summer climate watered them for us over the last few weeks. Stalled plans for the Community Wikihouse can proceed.

Keep up to date about all the Meanwhile Projects

FCI and Grove joint submission objecting to Grosvenor's planning application

31 July 2015

Our two organisations and Tollcross Community Council have raised objections to the PPP application by Grosvenor Estates for the land on the north side of Fountainbridge next to the Springside development. Our objection focuses on 3 key issues.

·         the process, especially the timing and scope of the application, the consultation exercise managed by Grosvenor, and the tendentious nature of the supporting documentation

·         the content of the proposals, especially the excessive height and monolithic form of the three blocks, the very poor architectural quality of the detailed proposals, the applicants’ failure to respond to the expressed concerns of the Edinburgh Urban Design Panel, and the proposed phasing of development

·         the failure to adequately address the immediate urban context, especially the opportunity created by the EDI masterplan for India Quay.

Meantime Activities on hold as Council explores asbestos issue

18 July 2015

During test drilling on the site, traces of asbestos were found below ground at Fountainbridge. Naturally the Council had to investigate the public health implications of this and they have employed experts to analyse the samples, decide on the level of risk involved and decide what needs to happen to make the area safe. This has been very frustratying for everybody. The Grove gardeners have not been able to work or harvest in what is the best gardening season in the year and the Forge and Pavilion plans have had to be stopped at the moment.

However, after a meeting with officials yesterday, we are hopeful that a solution will be found in the next couple of weeks. The latest proposal is to treat one corner of the site and re-group the meanwhile activities together there as soon as the treatment and costs are known and agreed by the Council and EDI.

We are hoping that the wheels of bureaucracy can move fast in this case so that the energy and commitment already contributed by hundreds of people  is not lost.

Massive Support for Community Pavilion

12 July 2015

Apart from our initial grant from the South West Neighbourhood Partnership, we have had more donations and help in kind from companies such as Scotmid, O'Hare & McGovern, Heriot Watt University, and Dunedin Canmore Housing Association.  Three workshops for local people, showing how the Wikihouse system works and providing a hands on session has produced a good list of volunteers for putting up the structure. At the Canal festival more people volunteered to help with the CNC wood cutting which takes a lot of hours. Bodan Workshops have made an amazing offer to let us have free access to their CNC machine, which saves us a lot of money but this needs to be done in the evenings and at weekends. A local film maker is offering his time to track our progress and people from Wikihouse have agreed to come up to Edinburgh next April to run a workshop about this amazing movement. See   Thanks to all who are contributing time and effort to make this unique project happen in Fountainbridge!

A Successful Canal Festival

12 July 2015

Thanks to Re-Union Canal Boats and Pat Bowie for organising another great Canal Festival when this hidden gem comes alive and thousands of people can see what a great resource the canal is - right in the centre of Edinburgh. Canoes and watersports, boat trips and crazy raft races - local stalls, tasty food, music and dancing. A real fun family day which is stitched together by a huge input from local people and organisations.

The sad news is though that Re-Union Canal Boats have to now find other premises as the corporate owner has now found a tenant able to pay full commercial rates. Re-Union has offered FCI free meeting space for hundreds of meetings over the last few years and has actively supported our development as a flourishing local group. Their presence in the canal basin has created a lively and authentic ambiance, which keeps the historical and contemporary use of the canal alive. We will be making strenuous efforts to try and ensure that they remain close to the canal side and continue their work.

Change of Venue for Pavilion Workshops at Canal Festival this Saturday 27th June

25 June 2015

As EDI the developer, are carrying out test drills on the site, all Meanwhile Activities are not able to use their site.

So the Workshops will take place at the Pregnancy & Parents Centre 10 Lower Gilmore Place instead.
