Application to turn Mecca Bingo site into more student accommodation

29 August 2014

FCI will oppose this application on the grounds that we are over supplied with student accommodation in Fountainbridge and this is not conducive to place making or to retaining families in the city centre. Proposals will be on view in Central Halls Tollcross on Tuesday Sept 9th September and Wednesday 10th Sept in Fountainbridge Library 2 - 7.30pm. Individual comments count for a lot, so if you want to comment contact the City of Edinburgh Council Planning Department on http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/info/20067/planning_applications/288/view_an.... More information will be sent out to all FCI members

More action on the site

22 August 2014

Last weekend the two blue shipping containers for the Forge Workshop arrived. Work will continue on them and in them over the next few weeks - to insulate them and to start creating a workspace.

The Edinburgh Printmakers have also created art panels in the windows of the old Rubber Factory - bringing a bit of welcome colour to the old building.

Temporary Activities on the site

12 July 2014

FCI and the Grove have been active in developing ideas for temporary activities to take place on the empty site. Grove 2 has already opened and is beginning to flourish. Other meetings following on from our AGM theme have attracted a lot of creative, energetic groups. We met with EDI last week to put forward some of these proposals and will await their response. Amongst these are a Forge Workshop to run classes in metal and woodwork over August; a Children's Adventure Playground where children can build and make their own fun; a self-build Community Pavilion that could provide shelter for a market/meetings/events and a passive energy "Grow House" which would develop a growing permaculture unit for all year round gardening. There are other ideas for boat storage and repair and food outlets. Once we have more definite news we'll get our next Newsletter out to you. In the meantime if anyone can find us some shipping containers - let us know!

Edinburgh Canal festival Sat 21st June

2 June 2014

If you want a great day out, come along to this local, not for profit, enjoyable family event when anything that can float (well almost) will be there. If you're feeling handy and have some unused milk cartons, oil cans or arm bands there's still time to make a raft!

At our AGM there was a lot of interest in "Meanwhile Developments" - temporary uses for the site. We want to encourage a buzzing hive of activity such as regular markets, small social enterprises, workshops, stalls, pop up cafes, tool library, walking groups, play areas for children and so on. If this is successful it will have an impact on how this neighbourhood develops as the building start to grow. Contact us if you are interested

"Coming Alive!" event and AGM Thursday 13th March 6pm Viewforth Church

13 February 2014

In the next month the hoardings will be coming down around the site. Steps will enable us to get down onto it and pathways will be constructed along the same lines as the eventual ways through the development.

Building will not be starting for a while and so “in the meantime” actions are being planned.

After the success of the Grove Community Garden on Springside, a Grove 2 is planned which will include small trees and saplings  - to start to green the site. Other ideas include the return of the Circus in summer as part of the Festival, an Open Air cinema, a Vintage monthly market and possible shipping containers for pop up accommodation for local craftspeople, boat builders, artists, social enterprises, small scale stalls, woodworkers, jewellers, upholsterers, machine shops, bakers, etc. Come along to find out more and add your ideas. All Welcome.

Thursday 13th March 6 - 8 pm, Viewforth Church.
